When Shay asks Tally to come with her to Smoke, Tally declines, but Shay goes.David-He is a mysterious friend of Shay's who has never been turned pretty that Tally wonders if he really exists. Once Tally reaches Smoke, she meets David. She falls in love with him, which starts some drama with Shay.
Dr. Cable- She is in Special Circumstances. She tells Tally that unless she finds Smoke, she will never be turned pretty. Maddy and Az-David's parents that used to be pretty. However, they run away to Smoke and make themselves Ugly again. They're trying to find a cure for the Pretty Mind. Croy- Tally meets Croy when she comes to Smoke. Croy is suspicious of her and thinks she may be a spy.

Pretties- people who have had the operation. They love to party and have fun.
Uglies- people 12-16. They haven't had the operation yet and they live in the dorms.
Littlies- kids 0-12. They live with their parents in Crumblyville.
Crumblies- adult. They are more responsible than pretties and have jobs.
Specials- Special Circumstances. They have inhuman strength and speed. They also have extra powerful senses. They look Pretty, but in a frightening way.
