Note from Ms. H: CAUTION -- CONTAINS SPOILERS!!This story is about a 15 year old girl named Tally who lives in a world where everyone gets an operation turning them pretty at 16. All of Tally's friends have been turned pretty and she can not wait for her turn. Then on one of her sneaky voyages across the river to New Pretty Town, she meets a girl named Shay who has not turned pretty yet either. Tally and Shay become great friends and pull all kinds of tricks together but when Shay decides to run away to a place called the Smoke (a secret community, where people like Shay who don't want to turn pretty at all because they feel it's not right escape to), Tally turns down her offer to bring her along. Shay did leave Tally directions just in case though. Now Tally is being told that unless she finds and betrays her friend, she will never be turned pretty. Tally now has to make the hardest decision of her life.
Tally decides to betray her friend and tell Doctor Cable about the instructions. Dr. Cable forces her to find the Smoke. After she makes her long, difficult journey to Smoke, she meets David, Croy, Maddy, Az, and so many more people. She decides she can't bare to turn them in. After she makes this decision, she trys to destroy the locket, which was a locater, that Dr. Cable gave her by throwing it into the fire. The next morning, Special Circumstances has arrived. SpecialCircumstances has captured or killed almost everyone in the Smoke. Tally is taken to Dr. Cable where she is congratulated on her success. When Dr. Cable asks where the locket is, Tally says that she hid it on the roof because she was afraid of someone finding her out. When she goes to get the locket with a Special Circumstance agent, she escapes and hides. She eventually finds David and they make a plan to save his parents and many others from the Smoke.
Luckily, they succeed. Unfortunately, someone has died during the operation and Shay is pretty. Maddy tells Tally that she has made a possible cure for "Pretty Minds" but they don't know if it will work. Shay refuses to take it, so being the brave girl Tally is, she volunteers. She writes a note to her pretty self, explaining how she promised to take the cure and how David will bring it to her. Once she's pretty, will David be able to bring her the cure and the note? If she reads the note, will she take the pills or be happy being pretty?
